![]() Adding constraints to card display that cause cards to display earlier or later than they were supposed to will make the spaced repetition system less effective, leading to more work than necessary, or forgotten cards. ![]() >Secondly, remember that Anki is using an algorithm to determine when the optimum time to show you material again is. Entering new notes into Anki would become a complicated process, as you’d have to search through the rest of the deck and assign relationships between the old and new material. >For one, unlike the sibling card case above, you would have to define all the relations yourself. This might sound like a nice idea in theory, but in practice it is not practical. They want to be able to tell Anki "after showing me this card, show me that card", or "don’t show me that card until I know this card well enough". >Some people want to extend this link between arbitrary cards. The Anki FAQ goes into the reasoning a bit: Maybe once you've crossed the 6 month threshold, it could just automatically archive the card. With a language, if you are immersed, you have constant daily repetition with or without the cards.Īll that to say, I think SRS algorithms should have a language learning mode that automatically archives vocabulary cards once you've mastered them to a certain degree. I think my experience is likely related to language learning itself. It could be that I have some latent savant-like language learning abilities, though I doubt that. And eventually I was spending so much time deleting cards that I just gave up on SRS altogether. So I just started deleting cards if I knew them already. There will be no point in reviewing them. But the thing is, with a language, I'm not going to forget all those words in 5 years. While it worked great in the beginning, within a year, I was just constantly telling the algorithm that I didn't need to review cards for 3-5 years. I learned Hungarian (one of the more difficult languages to learn) by loading up a database of ~10k cards. I just know them and, for the most part, won't forget. Once I learn words, I don't need to review them in x months or years. I keep running into the same problem, even with difficult languages: my knowledge of the language quickly outpaces the rate at which I can study new cards, and my ability to retain vocabulary doesn't really seem to fade. I've used Anki to learn languages with SRS for years. It'll at least let you find actual issues with anki, rather than the surface-level misunderstandings of it you've got now. It's probably worth trying to create a deck within anki that does what you want before building your own system. > I think it would be awesome to pair SRS with high quality images and audio, which I find most helpful for language learning.Īnki cards can include images and audio, and while a little less well, they also support videos. ![]() The default is 0, which gives the behavior you've observed (reset it all the way back). I've found 0.5 to be a good value, but you can tweak it of course. The above setting is called out in the "Adjust your New Interval" section of the link you provided, so it looks like you may have just missed that you already found the solution. if "easy" would have been "1 year", it now becomes "6 months" if it's easy the next time. In anki "Deck Options -> Advanced -> New interval -> 0.50" will make it so marking it as "Again" will cut the SRS interval by 50%, so i.e. > If you mostly know a card, but miss it on one day that card's learning progress should not be totally reset Instead, you should use some modifier to increase the interval to a reasonable level. Duolingo is great for grammar and explanations, but I can't take the pronunciations and tediousness of it all. I've used Rosetta Stone and Duolingo in the past Rosetta Stone has great audio and images but lacks a powerful SRS (it also has a number of other flaws in my mind, but I'll save that for another time). I think it would be awesome to pair SRS with high quality images and audio, which I find most helpful for language learning. Instead, you should use some modifier to increase the interval to a reasonable level. That leads you to have too many cards to review on a daily basis. If you mostly know a card, but miss it on one day for some reason - maybe you were tired or distracted, that card's learning progress should not be totally reset (as if you were learning it from scratch). When I was learning Chinese characters, I did a bit of a deep dive into the Anki algorithm and found that the biggest flaw (imho) was the Ease Factor knocking a card back to 0. I'd still love to create a better open-source SRS algorithm at some point in the future. Nice article! This would've been very helpful a few years back when I was attempting to make an Anki clone while teaching myself to code. ![]()

![]() ![]() I told him four different times with emphasis to be very careful around my tree. We started to clear out the area around the Japanese maple. The second time, however, is a different story. This worker did a great job this first time and followed my directions. The first session, we cleared out the area on the other side of the pond from the Japanese maple. Recently I hired someone who was recommended to me and we started work on getting the garden back into shape. During this period of neglect, some raspberry bushes and other wild invasive plants took over my garden. I’ve had some back problems that kept me from working on my garden for the last couple of years and I had not been able to find competent help during the meantime. I used to have a gardener but he died a few years ago. It is a beautiful little tree, or at least it was. ![]() In the rock garden area, I planted my low hanging Japanese maple. I created a zen rock garden with a two pond waterfall. We also wonder if because an evergreen bush lived there forever beforehand, that the soil is too acidic (is that even a thing with JMs?).Īny suggestions to revive or have we already lost it? My husband is convinced we’ve underwatered due to our overwatering PTSD. The tree probably gets more than the ideal amount of sun but still overall receives majority shade throughout the day. When I pull back the mulch, the soil is definitely moist but not soggy. That being said, we’ve had somewhat frequent light rains. Because of our previous experience, I have been hesitant to water too much. Seems to be evenly distributed around the tree – not limited to one branch or side. Just today I noticed about 1/4 of the leaves on the tree are starting to shrivel up and get crunchy. Made sure to plant slightly above the root ball, added fresh topsoil, and mulched. We picked a new spot (opposite side of the yard from where the previous two died as we knew those were due to overwatering and bad drainage). We did our best to pull away all the burlap to let the roots breathe. Typical with HD, the root ball had a lot of clay packed into it. We JUST planted a Bloodgood from Home Depot about 4 weeks back. ![]() Our Japanese Maple victim count is up to two over here and I’m worried we’re nearing three. My husband and I are well versed at killing trees. Fertilizer with something organic like fish emulsion fertilizer, Millorganite, or another organic fertilizer. That’s what all plants, especially Japanese maples need.īut not all of us have good soil in our yards so what do we do. For years and years vegetation falls to the earth and rots and becomes topsoil. Really good topsoil is just that, organic matter. What a Japanese maple really needs is good rich soil that contains a significant amount of organic matter. What Should I Use to Fertilize My Japanese Maple? Most ornamental plants physically cannot grow fast enough to use that much nitrogen and the overload of nitrogen will kill them almost immediately. Nitrogen drives top growth, vegetative growth, on plants. ![]() Upon completion of each puzzle, the player's performance is compared on a leaderboard based on the number of instructions placed in their reactors, the number of cycles it took to meet the quota, and the number of reactors required to meet the solution. Final boss levels, called out as defense levels, complete each planet here, the player must efficiently create chemicals and deliver them in a timely manner, once the reactor systems have been started, to trigger defense systems to ward off attacking enemies before they destroy a control structure. Players generally must complete each puzzle in order to progress to the next one, but the game includes optional harder puzzles. The game's puzzles are divided into groups set on different planets. The player must not only program the individual reactors, often limited in functionality such as one that can only break bonds but not form them, but plan out the location and order of reactors to make the final product. From here, the output from one reactor will become the input for another reactor the player is often free to determine what intermediate products to produce to send to the next reactor. In larger puzzles, the player can also guide the formation of chemicals through multiple reactors, which they place out on a larger rectangular grid representing the planet's surface. The player successfully completes each puzzle by constructing a program capable of repeatedly generating the required output, meeting a certain quota. Similarly, if a waldo delivers the wrong product, the player will need to check their program. While the two waldos can cross over each other without harm, collision of atoms with one another or with the walls of the reactor is not allowed such collisions stop the program and force the player to re-evaluate their solution. The product molecule does not need to match orientation or specific layout of the molecules as long as the molecule is topologically equivalent with respect to atoms, bonds, and bond types however, in larger puzzles, these factors will influence the inputs to downstream reactors. As such, the player is challenged to create a visual program to accept the given inputs, disassemble and reassemble them as necessary, and deliver them to the target output areas to match the required product. The reactors may support specific nodes, set by the player, that act where atomic bonds can be made or broken, where atoms can undergo fission or fusion, or where logic decisions based on atom type can be made. ![]() The two waldos can also be synchronized, forcing one to wait for the other to reach a synchronization command. The commands direct the movement of the waldo, to pick up, rotate, and drop atoms and molecules, and to trigger reactor events such as chemical bond formation. The player adds commands from an array to direct each waldo independently through the grid. Each reactor has up to two input and up to two output quadrants, and supports two waldos, red and blue, manipulated through command icons placed on the grid. The primary game mode of SpaceChem depicts the internal workings of a Reactor, mapped out to a 10 × 8 regular grid. In SpaceChem, the player takes the role of a SpaceChem Reactor Engineer whose task is to create circuits through which atoms and molecules flow with the aid of waldos to produce particular batches of chemical shipments for each level. Gameplay A SpaceChem program requiring the player to make titanium oxide and zinc oxide using titanium, zinc, and oxygen, and deliver the completed molecules to the appropriate quadrant on the right SpaceChem was incorporated into some academic institutions for teaching concepts related to both chemistry and programming.
